Futures trading platforms: how to choose one in 2026

Futures trading platforms are chosen on five points: the data feed they read, what they show of the order flow, the system they run on, what they really cost, and how your prop firm connects to them. This guide runs NinjaTrader, Tradovate, Sierra Chart, ATAS, Bookmap, Quantower and TurningTrade through those five criteria, every fact with its source. We publish TurningTrade: there’s no ranking, and the grid also says where we lag.

The five criteria that matter

1. The data feed

A platform shows what its feed sends. Rithmic, CQG, dxFeed or a broker feed don’t give the same depth. A price-level feed (MBP) aggregates orders by level; an order-level feed (MBO) shows each order, so you can see a wall refill or get pulled. Also check that your account, or your prop firm’s, runs through a provider the platform accepts. Our guide to market by order (MBO) data explains the difference in detail.

2. What you see of the order flow

Footprint (volume bought and sold at each price), book heatmap, DOM and Time & Sales, cumulative delta, Market Profile: not every platform ships all of them, and some sell them as separate add-ons. Look at what’s included in the plan you’ll actually pay for.

3. The operating system

Many order flow platforms are built for Windows. On a Mac you’re left with a native build when there is one, the browser, or virtualisation (Parallels, Crossover, Wine). On Linux the choice is even shorter.

4. The real price

Subscription, lifetime licence, add-ons, commissions: the models differ. Market data and exchange fees usually come on top of the software price. Compare over the period you plan to trade.

5. Prop firms

A prop firm gives you Rithmic, Tradovate or other credentials. The platform has to accept that connection type. On Rithmic, two applications connected to the same feed at the same time disconnect the first one1. What a Rithmic connection involves is on our Rithmic trading platform page.

Reading the grid for your situation

You want to try without paying

NinjaTrader and Tradovate have a Free plan with no monthly fee5, Bookmap a free Digital plan13, ATAS a free Start plan10, Quantower a limited free version17. TurningTrade has no free plan: only the lifetime licence is on sale.

You’re in a prop firm evaluation

Start with your credentials. Rithmic credentials open NinjaTrader Desktop, Sierra Chart (Integrated package), ATAS, Bookmap, Quantower and TurningTrade. Tradovate credentials connect through Web, Mobile or supported platforms2. TurningTrade doesn’t serve Tradovate yet.

You’re on a Mac

Bookmap15 and Tradovate6 ship a Mac app; ATAS X is in beta on macOS12; NinjaTrader goes through the browser3. TurningTrade runs natively on Apple silicon, with a Mac version (0.4.2) behind Windows. Details on our futures trading platform for Mac page.

You read the book at the order level

MBO is paid for in different ways: package 12 at Sierra Chart7, the MBO Bundle at Bookmap14, the Ultra plan at ATAS10. At TurningTrade, the Rithmic feed is read at the order level by the heatmap in the licence. Our Bookmap alternative comparison goes into this, and our ATAS alternative page does the same against ATAS.

You want an AI that reads your screens

ALFRED, TurningTrade’s assistant, reads what your modules display (session, quotes, the book up to twenty levels, journal, alerts, working orders) and answers with those numbers. He has 46 tools and eleven rights that you switch on one by one; live order sending is the only one off at install. Claude Code, Codex or Cursor connect over MCP. Details on the ALFRED page. What an AI can and can’t do inside a trading platform is in our AI trading platform guide.

What costs extra

The software price is rarely the full price. Bookmap13, Quantower18 and Sierra Chart7 say real-time data or exchange fees come on top; at Tradovate, the pricing page mentions “top of book” data with an approved and funded account, plus exchange, clearing and NFA fees5. At TurningTrade, the Rithmic account and data fees are separate.

A footprint built from an aggregated feed and one built from every trade don’t show the same thing. Before comparing two prices, check that both plans give you the same read.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best futures trading platform?

There isn’t one for everyone. Start from your credentials (Rithmic, CQG, Tradovate), your operating system, what you read (footprint, heatmap, MBO) and your budget over time, then read the grid line by line.

Is market data included in the price?

Usually not. Read the “Software price” line and the publisher’s page: exchange fees, the feed and commissions usually come on top. At TurningTrade, the Rithmic account and data fees are separate.

Can I open two platforms on the same Rithmic account?

Not directly: two applications on the same Rithmic feed disconnect the first one. Rithmic offers R|Trader Pro’s plugin mode to run several1, and ATAS says it can go that way9.

How much does TurningTrade cost?

The lifetime licence costs 1,499 USD (1,349 EUR in the euro area), paid once, with every later version, the 10-module order flow training and priority support. Subscriptions are shown and not on sale yet.

Does TurningTrade work with my prop firm?

If it gives you Rithmic credentials, yes. Firms recognised: Apex Trader Funding, Topstep, My Funded Futures, Tradeify, Phidias, Bulenox, Earn2Trade, TradeDay, Lucid Trading and Take Profit Trader. TurningTrade isn’t affiliated with any of these brands.

If TurningTrade ticks your boxes

Lifetime licence at 1,499 USD (1,349 EUR in the euro area) for Windows, Mac and Linux, with every later version, the 10-module order flow training and priority support. Your Rithmic account and data fees stay separate.
